RU-58841 is a nonsteroidal anti-androgen which was formerly under investigation for potential use as a topical treatment for androgen-dependent conditions including acne, pattern hair loss, and excessive hair growth. Human hair growth can be monitored for several months after the transplantation of scalp samples from men with androgen-dependent alopecia onto female nude mice. This model was used in a recent controlled study to evaluate the effect of RU-58841 on human hair growth. The values for the linear hair growth rates were found to be significantly higher in the RU58841-treated group. Recycling and increased linear hair growth indicate the potential of a positive growth action for RU58841 on human hair from balding samples grafted onto nude mice conditioned with testosterone, and encourage more research and clinical trials to evaluate its potential in the treatment of androgen-dependent alopecia.
